Reuniting the Team
For the third consecutive year, our team reunited to participate in Junction 2024, held from November 8–10 at Kaapelitehdas in Helsinki. The anticipation was palpable as we gathered, eager to tackle new challenges and push our creative boundaries.
Selecting Our Challenge
This year, the release of challenges was delayed, which led us to dedicate the entire first evening to strategic planning. After thorough discussion, we chose KONE’s challenge: “BIM for any building, by anyone.” Our goal was to develop a solution that could transform building floor plans into easily modifiable 3D models, addressing a significant industry-wide problem.
Crafting Our Solution
We approached the challenge methodically:

Backend Development: We constructed a backend system leveraging an existing AI model capable of generating 3D models from 2D floor plans. This innovation allowed for quick and accurate model creation.

Web Interface: The generated 3D models were displayed in a web browser, enabling users to add essential elements such as elevators and other equipment seamlessly.

Augmented Reality Experience: To enhance user interaction, we developed a mobile application that showcased the 3D models in augmented reality. Users could view the models on a tabletop or immerse themselves within the virtual building, providing a comprehensive spatial understanding.
Balancing Work and Rest
Understanding the importance of rest, we ensured to get a good night’s sleep after our initial planning session. This approach kept us energized and focused throughout the hackathon. As the event progressed, we worked diligently, often staying up late to refine our project. Despite the long hours, we prioritized sufficient rest, knowing our project was on track.
The Sauna Break
With our project and pitch deck completed ahead of schedule, we seized the opportunity to relax in the venue’s sauna. The panoramic views were breathtaking, and the experience rejuvenated us, providing a perfect respite before the final evaluations.
Unexpected Recognition
After our peer review session, we went for a meal. Just as we were finishing, a fellow participant informed us that the organizers wanted to speak with our team. Initially surprised, we soon realized we might have been selected as one of the top 10 teams invited to present on stage.
The Grand Finale
This year, Junction altered its award structure: the top 10 teams would present on stage, with a €20,000 prize pool distributed among the top 5. The anticipation was intense as we awaited our turn in the crowded auditorium. Despite technical delays causing over an hour’s wait, our designated speaker delivered a compelling presentation early in the lineup.
Celebrating Success
Drumroll, please! We secured 3rd place overall at Junction 2024, earning a generous cash prize. Additionally, we were recognized as one of the leading teams in our specific challenge category. The sense of accomplishment was immense.
Looking Ahead
A heartfelt thank you to our incredible team for their dedication and creativity. This experience was once again amazing and I eagerly anticipate what challenges and innovations next year will bring.
