Overview & Background
It was time to continue developing the “Laikku” app and finally bring the user interface into the modern era. This project also served as a great opportunity to properly learn how to use Figma. When I transferred from one volunteer fire brigade (VPK) to another, I came across a similar application and had discussions with the developer about possible collaboration. The first phase involved aligning the functionalities of both apps and brainstorming what the unified interface could look like.
Issue addressed: The original interface was outdated and needed a visual and functional refresh to improve usability and user experience.
The motivation for the project came from a clear need to modernize the app and explore a shared direction with a similar solution already in use. Research, user needs, and interface trends inspired the design process.
Development Process
This time, the project did not (at least for now) include any actual coding. The new UI direction was sketched by first selecting a suitable color theme. The interface was optimized to prioritize what users need to access quickly in emergency scenarios. The map functionality was made more prominent, and a layer-switching feature was added to control what is visible on the map.
Outcome
The result was a user interface that inspired both original app developers to see the potential for combining their work. Feedback was gathered from members of the rescue department, who described the UI as clean and modern.
- Positive user feedback from pilot participants.
- Concept UI that served as a foundation for potential collaboration.
Next Steps / Future Improvements
- Full implementation of the app. The Southwest Finland Rescue Department recently held a competition for a similar app to be adopted across multiple municipalities. As a result, this project is currently on hold, with no clear path forward for broader deployment at the moment.
